The Blue Flag Program of Costa Rica is a joint effort on the part of several Costa Rican authorities to reward beaches that meet stringent criteria of the program. The venture includes efforts of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, MINAE (Ministry of Environment), National Water Service, Ministry of Public Health and CANATUR (National Tourism Chamber) and community officials.
To begin, the coastal community applies to receive Blue Flag distinction. Then, the Blue Flag Ecology Program evaluates beaches “on water quality of the ocean and the drinking water, waste disposal, sanitary facilities, signage, tourist safety, environmental education and involvement of the community in beach maintenance,” according to Go Visit Costa Rica. To receive Blue Flag ranking, the overall assessment score must be at least 90%.
More communities apply for Blue Flag Distinction every year, which has led to increased knowledge and protection of Costa Rica’s beaches. Being awarded Blue Flag distinction does not mean it is forever kept. Beaches are re-inspected annually to make sure they still meet all Blue Flag criteria. Thirty beaches along Guanacaste’s North Pacific Coast have the distinction of being awarded the Blue Flag in 2013. Having Blue Flag certification provides strong incentives to communities and businesses to work together to protect the beaches of Costa Rica and in turn, continue on a path of sustainable and proactive ecotourism.
Many of the beaches we surf at on our Costa Rica surf trips are involved in the Blue Flag program.
