Juan Santamaria Day in Costa Rica is a national holiday every April 11th. It is held in celebration of the triumph in the Battle of Rivas in 1856 against United States native, William Walker. Walker had aspirations of developing a prospering slave exchange business in a few Central American nations and he was feeling extremely sure after his annihilation of Nicaragua that he could then conquer Costa Rica.
After seeing this imminent danger, the Costa Rican government called upon its kin to go to Nicaragua for battle. Juan Santamaria was a dejected drummer kid of the armed forces who volunteered to put an end to this danger and turned himself into a legend and national hero. He set afire the inn where many of Walker’s troops were living in Nicaragua. This brought about an inordinate measure of deaths in Walker’s armed forces.
This demonstration of boldness sadly likewise executed Juan Santamaria too. He was lethally wounded by gunfire from the adversary. Costa Rica became a sovereign country due to Santamaria’s brave enactment. Upbeat parades, festivals and firecrackers are held on this celebratory national holiday in Costa Rica!
Many organizations, schools and government establishments are closed for the day and the parades will block activity in communities around the country. Costa Rica’s primary airport is found in San Jose and is named the Juan Santamaria Airport which is titled after their national hero. The main festival is in Alajuela at the Juan Santamaria Park, beginning at 9 a.m. and is composed of music, a fun parade, and a report from the President.
