To deepen our understanding of ourselves and the nature of the universe, we need look no further than the oceans of the earth. From its vast depths comes forth the wisdom of the ages, if we are only willing to take the time to comprehend.
Here are 4 things the ocean can teach us
- We are one with the universe.
Surfers feel the waves ebb and flow beneath their boards, and experience synchronicity with the water only when they relax and move in harmony with the ocean. In those moments, it is crystal clear that people are one with the universe. There is no separation between us, and every living thing in the expanse of space and time.
- We are smaller than nature.
Swimmers and surfers know better than to try to fight the ocean. The ocean harbors secrets and strength, and it is not to be messed with. Powerful surfers enjoy the challenge of giant waves and rough surf, but the smartest surfers are also keenly aware that the ocean can crush them if there is no respect for its power and might.
- Our influence can be negative or positive.
Even the vastness of the ocean is susceptible to the negative influences of uncaring mankind. Surfers get a first hand, close up look at the ocean as they ride the waves. Sometimes, the scenery includes plastic litter and waste, dead fish or dying coral. These are the negative impacts that thoughtless individuals have left behind in nature. One piece of litter can have major detrimental effects. Each person is responsible for influencing nature in negative or positive ways.
- Life is tenuous.
In a surfer’s world, life hangs in the balance in a very literal way. One wrong move on the ocean can have fatal consequences. The same is true of life all over the world. Life is tenuous, and it should be respected and protected at every turn.
At Real Surf Trips, we honor and respect the ocean and teach that to our guests in our Costa Rica surf camps. We’re grateful that it gives us the opportunity to experience its natural beauty and strength every day.
