Language can be a barrier between you and the fun that you are supposed to enjoy while here. It is why we’re sharing these Costa Rica slang terms to learn some of the common words that may hear during your Costa Rica vacation, as you converse with the locals.  Especially if they’re talking about the most recent soccer, of futbol, game.

Costa Ricans uses Spanish as their official language. But just as the norm with other cultures, the residents here have different slangs that have been formed from the official Spanish language.

Costa Ricans have different ways of using words, which are not commonly used in other Spanish-speaking countries. They are special in their own way.

A common word in the streets of Costa Rica is the word Mejenga. This word can be used to refer to a casual soccer game, that is often played in the streets or a local field. The match doesn’t necessarily have the usual number of players or even uniforms.

In Costa Rica, the word Mejenga is often used to refer to soccer matches and at the beaches where groups of youth also meet to play soccer.

In a conversation, this is how you would hear the word mejenga used.

Boy 1: Hey Juan, I heard there will be a mejenga in the neighborhood tomorrow, do you know when?

Boy 2: What good mejenga is happening tomorrow?

Apart from being used as a term to refer to a soccer match, it can also be used to describe a non-professional game played on the street or between friends. It can also be used as a derogatory term for a poor quality football game.
