International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th. While still about 2 weeks away from the first day of Spring, this is a day that is often celebrated with surfing festivals exclusively for girls. For a long time, surfing was considered a man’s sport. As with most sports, women were largely excluded from participating.
However, the sport of surfing is a bit unique. While, in the past, it was possible to exclude women from participating in sanctioned surfing contests, it was not possible to keep women out of the water. Gradually, more and more girls grabbed a surfboard and hit the waves. Now, there are sanctioned events for girls all over the world.
Thousands of girls all over the world don their wet suits on March 8th, grab their surfboards, and hit the waves. Many of these festivals are sponsored by women’s clubs or businesses run by women. One thing they all have in common is a celebration of women’s rights and equality.
At Real Surf Trips, we’ve been fortunate to host many female surfer and SUP camps. These camps offer girls an opportunity to be mentored by veteran female surfers, learn the art of surfing, and enjoy camaraderie with strong female role models.
