The importance of wild places cannot be understated. They provide insight into the beauty of nature and they allow people to see why nature is worth preserving. While there is a heavy economic incentive for people to tour wild places or to tear them down for new tourism spots, wild places are extremely important for any country and very much so for Costa Rica as its popularity and annual tourism grow.
Wild places are important for many different reasons, but one of the most important reasons is the wildlife. Wild places give native wildlife a safe place to live and everything in the natural environment works off of each other – the circle of life, if you will. If the wild places are to disappear, then the wildlife will either disappear with them or they will begin to encroach into more developed areas. This would be detrimental to both humans and the wildlife which is why 25% of the land in Costa Rica is protected.
Our natural environment in Costa Rica has an abundance of beautiful plants and wildlife. We also have a large tourism industry that continues to grow over time. Tourism often can be a threat to the long term sustainability of wild places. Fortunately, Costa Rica and other organization have started taking actions in order to protect wild places. One of the actions that is being taken by organizations in Costa Rica is to create high quality preservations throughout Costa Rica. Places such as Witches Rock and Ollies Point only allow for a certain number of tourist passes to be distributed each year.
There has also been a movement towards educating tourists about the environment, so that tourists will be as careful as possible when they are near wild places. This educational movement has been successful as it has been shown that more and more tourists are being mindful of the environment while they are in Costa Rica. In the long run there is a great hope in Costa Rica that the country will start to experience more and more sustainable tourism, benefiting both the environment and the economy.
