From October to July, surfers have an impressive array of breaks to enjoy, and all year every night of the week, the reggae scene is on fire. From roots nights like DubClub to dancehall mainstays like Uptown Mondays, you will be blown away day and night on your Jamaica Real Surf Trip.

Vibrant and full of exotic Caribbean flavor, this island features warm, turquoise water, stunning beaches, and world-class waves for all levels of surfers. The original inhabitants of Jamaica are believed to be the Arawaks, also called Tainos. They came from South America 2,500 years ago and named the island Xaymaca, which meant “land of wood and water”. That name stands to this day, as the forested mountains lead way to an endless series of rivers and waterfalls. This truly is a one of a kind tropical paradise.

Jamaica has been largely overlooked by surfing tourists, which means you will be surfing mainly with your crew and perhaps a few others. Access to most breaks is easy and getting around the island is an experience in and of itself, with small towns leading to wide expanses of countryside. The capital Kingston also has some excellent surf. This is where so much of Reggae music is created, and the themes of the songs are seen being played out everywhere one looks. This would be one location where a qualified guide is mandatory, both in terms of scoring good conditions for the surf….and moving about the Island on a variety of activities. Our native guides are professional, world traveled, knowledgeable on all the breaks and conditions, and are proud to share their culture day and night, showing you a side of Jamaica we are very privileged to experience.

Why choose Real Surf Trips?

Fully-guided services – Local knowledge is the only way to score good surf in this region. Caribbean swells are short interval and tide swings are slight. The smallest change in conditions turns one spot off as another turns on. Our guide’s command of these variables is truly impressive, and leads to us always scoring the best surf breaks in the area for a given day.

Unparalleled local knowledge – We keep surprising our guests with various adventures and experiences, which comes from lifetimes of experience in surf and the reggae culture, deep insights about surf spots, and knowledge of multifarious local secrets.

Strategically positioned – We are located between a variety of breaks. The conditions change fast in Jamaica, and we tend to bounce all over the place to score the next break as it starts doing it’s thing.

Options for more – Jamaica is a unique island with an abundance of natural beauty. For laid back travelers who would like to do more than just surfing, there is snorkeling, hiking, waterfalls, fishing, island tours, and other programs. Check out the Bob Marley museum, Tuff Gong Studios and Studio One, and retrace the history of reggae music first hand. We plan a variety of other activities besides surfing that will captivate your heart and stimulate your mind.

Surfing in Jamaica is unique.

No other surfing destination in the world would has this exotic mix of surf and culture. Just driving through Kingston or trips to remote coastal villages, this is what real cultural surf travel is all about. Jamaican people are kind and spiritual. “Peace and Love” is a common greeting.

  • Less crowds in the water than Puerto Rico and daily flights from all major US cities.
  • Consistent swells on both the North and South Eastern coasts gives dozens of options on most any given day with swell.

Where to surf?

The coastline has an impressive variety of spots, each working on it’s own combination of wind, tide, swell angle/interval… Most setups are cobblestone points that work on punchy close interval swells. Our local guides are on top of the data on the daily and know the formula to make the call for each given day.

What is surfing like in Jamaica?

The irie vibe in the water and unbelievable water color and scenic beauty makes surfing in Jamaica unlike anywhere else on Earth. The contrast between the city spots and remote country beaches are surprising and remarkable.

Shortboards and fishes work well here, as do fun boards and logs for some spots and small days.

Average water temps are around 80 °F

When is the best surf season in Jamaica?

Swells are seen from October to July, which is the main season for top quality waves, but there are fun sized waves for beginners all year round!

What airport do I fly into?

Kingston (KIN)

Jamaican food

Jamaican food

Jamaican food includes a wide variety of tropical fruits, seafood and meats, all with a distinctive touch which is at once delicious and nutritious. It features a mixture of cooking techniques, flavors, spices and influences of India, Africa, and China.

It is always modified to incorporate fresh local produce. Popular Jamaican dishes include curry goat, fried dumplings, ackee and saltfish (cod) – the national dish of Jamaica – fried plantain, “jerk” chicken or fish, steamed cabbage and “rice and peas” (pigeon peas or kidney beans).

Vegetarian options also abound as Ital food is the conscious diet of the Rastafarian religion. Jamaican patties and various pastries and breads are also popular as well as fruit beverages and Jamaican rum. The local beer is Red Stripe, a lighter lager which goes amazing with the local food. Guinness is also popular as is the Jamaican classic: Dragon Stout- it is a dark brew with a slightly sweet after taste.

Jamaican food will be a highlight of your trip and we are happy to accommodate any food allergies or dietary restrictions.
