Surf season on the waters of Costa Rica’s Pacific Northwest shore has arrived! Every surfer knows it is time for one of the best surfing experience in Costa Rica’s waters… But the question is, do you want to make the best of your surfing vacation this season? I bet that was a nod! Making the best of your surfing vacation entails several things but the most important one is the timing element. Even though Costa Rica offers a year round surfing platform, the months of March through October happens to be the best time for a superb surfing experience here on the Nicoya Peninsula.
Because Costa Rica is bordered on one side by the Pacific, it is said to absorb nearly anything from northwest wintertime swells to southern hemisphere waves. You can be sure that waves will form as long as a considerable size of a storm is availed in the ocean.
Here in Guanacaste on the Pacific side, the swells on the western coast don’t get to the same heights seen in the seasons of storms in the Caribbean, but they are consistently good year-round. We normally get the best swells on the Pacific side from March to October. The dry spell on the west coast, from mid-November until mid-April, often offers some good sessions on the water as well… really the waves are great the whole year on the Pacific.
There are minimal changes on the temperatures of the waters recording a fluctuating figure of about 80 to around 84 degrees Fahrenheit almost the whole year. You may want to bring with you a rash guard and a liberal amount of sunscreen, making sure you’re protecting yourself against the rays of our year-round tropical sun.
