A must do for your Costa Rica surf trip: the Farmers Market

Many people enjoy heading to their local weekend farmer’s market and picking up some fresh fruits and vegetables, but visiting a farmer’s market in Costa Rica can be a whole different experience for many travelers.

You’ll find many farmers markets throughout Guanacaste with vendors and merchants eager to sell and teach about their fares. From unique and beautiful homemade jewelry and accessories, original arts and crafts, to organic foods — including spices and cheeses — and homemade household products, there’s always something to find. There is often even live music to enrich the atmosphere.

Not only are the different foods available delicious, the majority of them are healthy options. Whether you are looking for ingredients or already prepared food, it is always a smart choice to get grocery shopping done at a feria de agriculture.

Costa Rica is fortunate because it has a huge array of fresh tropical vegetables and fruits all year long. You’ll find the foods that you already know and love, but you’ll also find some new ones to try and may just become your new favorites, among which may be a pejibaye, a palm tree fruit, a fruit described as a “cross between a squash and a walnut”, or a chayote, an actual squash that is high in nutritional value.

A large part of farmers market is often found in the organic spices. Commonly regarded with such strong aromas that you just have to buy some, you will find a large variety of different kinds to try.

Beyond the numerous different foods to try, a major plus to many for visiting farmer’s markets is getting to know the locals and listening to their stories, meeting other travelers, and learning more about the beautiful culture of Costa Rica. You will find friendly locals who are happy to share their own experiences and knowledge and teach you about their variety of goods.

We encourage you to experience the culture as a part of your Costa Rica surf trip.  The feria is just one way you can do that!
