The definition of a swell? It is what every surfer in the world is always waiting for because it’s what brings the waves to shore…the ones that we all want to surf and rip out. The swells come from a storm in the ocean and the strong winds move and push the water in certain ways to create waves that travel for really long distances until it gets into shore. Our surf season in Costa Rica with the best swells is from March – September.
It is a swell when there’s a group of waves going in the same direction one behind another. The energy and force of every wave in a swell will depends of the swell period which means the distance between every wave. If it’s a short period like 8 or 10 secs between each wave, the waves won’t have much height or power and could probably reach around 3 foot. But if it is a swell with a long period like 16 or 18 secs it could reach 12 or 13 feet.
Traveling across the ocean, the wave will break in many different ways, with different speeds and shapes depending on the kind of beach or reef break. Learn more about surfing during your beginner’s surf trip in Costa Rica with Real Surf Trips!
