Surfing is one of the best sports in the world. However, the ocean can be a dangerous place. There needs to be a harmony and balance between surfers and the ocean. In the spirit of keeping everyone’s surf experience safe, let’s get into some quick etiquette tips for beginner surfers.
Don’t Ditch Your Board
Try the best you can to control your board. If your board flies it can seriously injure another surfer, or even yourself. Master the duck dive and turtle roll if you ride a longer board.
Right Of Way
Here’s the right of way rule: the surfer closest to the breaking peak has priority. If two surfers are on different sides of the peak, they each have the right of way to drop in on their respective sides. If someone is in a better position for taking off on a wave, then wait for the next. If you snake someone, apologize. Especially if you’re surfing a new spot for the first time. This might not always smooth things over but it’s worth a try and shows good manners.
You Can’t Surf Every Wave
Riding every wave isn’t fun for anybody but you. Try the best you can to take your turn. Courtesy is contagious. So don’t be a wave hog!
